The Ferrari-Visca Family of Ct. Ticino, Switzerland
The photo shown above was received from Enzo and Ines Tedeschi, of Giubiasco, Switzerland in 1982. It is a piece of wood from the past found in an old house of some descendants of the Ferrari-Visca family. Ines said it may have originally been a piece of furniture, but is difficult to say for sure, as it is in poor condition. The name, "Gion Battifta Ferari Vifcha", is written in early script and dated from 1600-1650. According to Ines, in approximately 1600 a Visca arrived in Switzerland from Southern Italy. One of the later Visca descendants married a Ferrari who was already living in Switzerland, thus this Ferrari family became known as Ferrari-Visca.

The family is listed in the Canton Records of Switzerland as, "Patrizia di Bedigliora", when the Visca Family became Swiss citizens; they applied in the town of Bedigliora, where they were living at the time. Bedigliora is near Lugano in the Magliasna Valley.

I’ve started our genealogy report with Joannes Ferrario known as Visca. After receiving the “Famiglia Ferrari-Visca: Patrizia di Bedigliora” from Ines and Enzo, I was able to order microfilms at the Family History Library for the church records of Giubiasco. I found the names of Joannes Ferraro known as Visca and Maria Candida, daughter of the late Joannes Baptista Bedeschi of Giubiasco from the 1786 baptism record of Joannes Baptista Gaspar Maria Ferrario Visca. So far, this is the earliest documented record, of this family, I've located. The record states: “…baptized the infant son, of the late Giovanni Ferrario known as Visca and Maria Candida daughter of the late Giovanni Baptista Bedeschi of Giubiasco…"

I have additional information on some of descendants not included in this report. Most of my information is from public or family sources, however, in the interest of personal privacy, I choose to continue only our direct lineage from Joannes Ferrari-Visca to Roy Peter Ferrari for seven generations. There may also be more children than I have listed for the early ancestors, however in some cases,  these are the only records that I’ve found. Sometimes these microfilms are hard to read, often the records have ink spotched pages, torn or even missing pages, etc. The + before a child's name indicates their lineage continues to the next generation. You will, undoubtedly find spelling and/or typing errors, however some of these are the actual spellings that I found on the original records. Let us know if you have questions or additions.

The surviving three daughters all stayed in Switzerland with one of them living in or near Milano, Italy for awhile. Six of the sons immigrated to the United States, with one brother, Samuele, staying in Switzerland. Samuele has descendents with the Ferrari-Visca surname still living in Switzerland. However, in California, the surname became known as Ferrari for Cesare, Amleto, Angelo, Oscar and Giuseppe.
